A truly unique experience on a hidden island

Welcome to Setouchi, a region in western Japan that surrounds the serene Seto Inland Sea.

Our exclusive tour takes you to the small island of Momoshima, a hidden art "base" located off the coast of Onomichi with a population just shy of 400 residents.

Momoshima is home to ART BASE MOMOSHIMA - a contemporary art center that aims to explore the artistic potential and utilize the heritage of the island that suffers from depopulation.

You will be immersed in art and scenery - walking through art installations scattered around the island, and enjoying outdoor lunch with a special menu created just for this occasion.  Our art sites are far from conventional museums, utilizing mostly abandoned buildings and structures.

We hope you join us.

About us | Our Founder

Since opening our doors in 2012, ART BASE MOMOSHIMA continues to explore the region's hidden heritage and the Setouchi islands through creative endeavors with guest artists and collaborators.

Founded by renowned contemporary artist Yukinori Yanagi, inspired by his decade-long project on the nearby island of Inujima reutilizing a former copper refinery into a contemporary art museum. Yanagi has called Momoshima home since 2010 when he moved his studio to the abandoned school building where ART BASE is now located. His dedication and focus to discovering artistic potential within a community affected by depopulation can be seen throughout the island in many projects such as building an installation in the abandoned movie theater, reimagining guest houses as art spaces, and curating contemporary art events and exhibits.
